Dance-Holland has drawn this figure in a rapid, sketchy manner with a medium-soft graphite pencil. The work is primarily a line drawing with minimal shading. On the back of the sheet there is a dense layer of powdery red chalk . Close inspection of the front reveals fine, silvery lines indented in the paper which follow the outline and some of the details of the figure. These were produced by a metal stylus which was pressed into the paper in order to transfer the image by offsetting red chalk lines onto an underlying piece of paper.
