The yellow colour of the ink in this drawing is not typical of iron-gall ink. However, the ink is visible through the back of the paper ; this suggests that Dance-Holland has indeed used iron-gall ink but added another pigment to alter the colour. The image was initially sketched with a fine pen and ink line. It was then filled with broad washes made from dilutions of the same ink, applied with a brush. The darkest details were added with undiluted ink.
