生平

他在1933年构思了核连锁反应，与恩里科·费米共同获得了核反应堆的专利，并于1939年撰写了由阿尔伯特·爱因斯坦签署的信件，促成了研发原子弹旳曼哈顿计划。他构思了电子显微镜。他还构思了直线粒子加速器（英语：Linear particle accelerator）（时为1928年，对于之前古斯塔夫·伊辛（英语：Gustav Ising）于1924年发表的期刊论文，及罗夫·威得娄（英语：Widerøe）成功制造出该装置，西拉德并不知晓）和回旋加速器。他本人并没有制作出上述的装置，也没有在科学期刊发表上述构思，因此很多时候这些贡献并没有归入他的名下，而是给了其他人。所以西拉德并没有获得过诺贝尔物理学奖，但是他的两项发明却获得了这个奖项。
