中式算盘

19世纪之前

早期的计算器为纯手动式，如算盘和算筹与计算尺等。算盘通常是以滑动的珠子制成。在西方，算盘在印度阿拉伯数字流行前使用了数个世纪，且在近代中国的记账与商务上仍广泛使用。后来出现机械计算器。

19世纪

巴贝奇将计算工具的概念更往前推，试图创建第一个可编程式计算器，但他建造的机器太重了，因而无法操作。

20世纪

20世纪70年代开始，微处理器技术被吸纳进计算器制程，最初的微处理器是Intel于1971年为日本名为Busicom（日语：ビジコン）的计算器公司生产的，1972年惠普推出第一款掌上科学计算器HP-35。

概观

在过去，诸如算盘、纳皮尔骨头、数学表书籍、工程计算尺或机械加法机（adding machine）在数值计算上扮演辅助角色。计算器这词原本指的是以纸笔运行数学计算的职业人士，这样的半手动计算工作既繁重又易出错。

现代的计算器以电力为动力，且拥有从便宜、信用卡尺寸的简易设备到附打印功能的特殊计算器等多种形状与尺寸。

电子计算器

过去有些计算器像是今日的计算机一样大，第一个机械计算器是桌面型机械设备，但很快被桌面型电力机械计算器取代，之后又被真空管、晶体管、集成电路逻辑线路等材料依序取代。今日大部分计算器是掌上型微电子设备。
